The Indonesian government is exercising more caution in maintainig security in national waters in the Ambalat block following manouvers by Malaysian warships encroaching on Indonesian territory.
"We will have to increase our vigilance and control over the waters in Ambalat," Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) Commander General Djoko Santoso said here on Sunday.
The TNI and the Malaysian armed forces were already adhering to standard operation procedures in patroling the waters in the block which became a bone of contention between the two countries following overlapping claims. Yet, Malaysian warships were recently perceived to have trespassed on Indonesian territory in the area.
"The most important thing is that we continue to control the sea border in Ambalat waters while trusting that the two governments will reach a settlement of the dispute through diplomatic means," he said.
Djoko further said every development in Ambalat waters was now reported to the coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs, the defense minister and the foreign minister.
"As a matter of fact, if there is a violation, both sides will carry out their tasks in line with the common procedures they have agreed upon, including how to communicate with each other in case one side trapassed on the other side`s territory," he said.
The two countries` border in Ambalat must be defined soon by the two nations, he said.
While negotiations on the border were still going on, TNI continued to secure the Ambalat waters in line with the standard operation procedures adopted by the TNI and Malaysian Defense Forces, he said.
The TNI Chief said the two countries often hold routine meetings to discuss various issues concerning the two nations` borders on land and in the seas.
Indonesia`s KRI Untung Surapati-872 warship on Sunday managed to drive away a Malaysian warship, the KD Yu-3500, which had tried to trespass Indonesian waters in the Ambalat Block.
A day earlier, the Indonesian Navy`s KRI Hasanudin-366 also drove away KD Baung-3509, a helicopter of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, and a Malaysian Beachraft which tried to enter the Ambalat Block.
According to the TNI, nine territorial violations by Malaysian marine and police vessels had happened in the recent past.
Recently, Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said negotiations between Indonesia and Malaysia on the status of the Ambalat block border were still going on, but no agreement had been reached.

Dutch oil company Shell had bought the rights to drill in the area from Indonesia earlier and then sold it to an Italian company. Now Indonesia and Malaysia will discuss the ownership of the block.
I would like to warn Malaysian oil company Petronas to consider the fact that we are peoples of the similar race and cultures and forget about business decisions. We were disappointed when Malaysia occupied the Sipadan and Ligitan islands. Unfortunately, the Indonesia delegation was unable to defend our ownership in the International Court -- that was probably due to our poor use of the English language.
Do not dream that you will get Ambalat in the way you got Sipadan and Ligitan. It is clear from the current situation that the Indonesian people would prefer to engage in open war rather than lose Ambalat.
